August 1 and once again it begins again
In which I explain the significance of the first day of August
August 1 is the first day of the Carlitude New Year. Make 9 resolutions, establish the principle of verticality, listen for that Duquesne whistle, and never give up, never surrender.
August 1 is also the second anniversary of my retirement from full-time faculty employment. I remain available for shoe shining; coaching and mentoring for shoe shoppers, Apple products, eyeglasses, pens/pencils, and notebooks/journals; consultation on the non-academic use of semi-colons and Oxford commas; reviews of Brit police procedurals; the prospects of my Pittsburgh Pirates making the playoffs; pie tasting; and general opining about the shape of the world. I am still able to talk your leg off, and I will do your worrying for you on consignment. Nearly always available for lunch. Watch this space for further developments.
